Reviews about Heritage Kitchen & Bath

  • January 08, 2019, by Reed Bernstein
Mostly this job went well. The finished countertop looks good and the fit to the old crooked walls is excellent. Just make sure you don't ask a question that incurs the wrath of the owner. Anyone who looks at the finished product will say it looks great. That is why I gave this review 4 stars. But this was a 3-star experience at best. I built this kitchen myself, so I know a bit about construction. After measurements where taken, I was uneasy about something so I asked that things be double checked. Perhaps this is a strange request in this industry, based on the response that I got. But they did come back and I was satisfied. The irony is that there was a measurement that was off after all; it was adjusted on-site, so worked out fine - more or less. The sink is not centered in the cutout as a result. Not a major issue, but just a tad annoying. A second issue was that as the countertop installation was starting I saw one of the installers putting up a supports on the wall to serve as extension support for the ends that had no cabinet underneath. I told him the wall was old plaster and lathe, as he looked for non-existent studs with a magnetic stud finder, and that he needed to use anchors. He looked at me blankly and then shot a few screws into the wall. When I took a look, the supports were coming right back out. I had to pull the support off the wall and install the anchors myself. Not exactly impeccable work on their part, with seemingly no concern about that whatsoever. The worst part of the process was that I questioned how the sink was being installed. I received a misleading (IMO) answer to my question, and called the next day to find out more, and to ask if this was really done right. Instead, the owner got extremely nasty with me, in a way that was actually a bit shocking (remember, I am a customer paying $5,400 for this job!). I never did get a good explanation from her as to why it was fine. That did not happen until I called another contractor who explained it. Finally, I don't use a checkbook, checks are issued from my bank online, a common practice in today's world. I got a request for first payment that had to be in the form of a check at 5:30 on the evening before the day the measurements were to be taken in the morning (with even a one-day notice, I could have picked up a check from my bank). I offered to have a check sent from my bank as usual, but they wanted it that next morning because they said they are on COD basis with their supplier. I offered to pay by credit card but was told there would be a 3% additional charge for that! This was all very unprofessional in my opinion. I found an old checkbook from a dormant account and worked it out so they did not have a wait for the bank to issue the check (to be fair they did grudgingly say they would wait a few days for the bank check, but it was as if they were doing me a huge favor). I don't use outside contractors much, but I've heard that it can often be challenging. So this might just be a normal experience. But these elements that I listed here were not pleasant. And I have a sink that is not centered to remind me of it. I can only assume that the owner felt fully justified in her condescending anger that was directed at me, as no call to apologize has been forthcoming.
